October Meeting – Weds 4th at 19:00

Hello one and all, the next meeting of Liverpool Linux User Group will take place on Wednesday October 4th at 7pm BST (UTC+1).

This month we have something slightly different. We’re getting away from the cloudy cloud cloud stuff and into embedded Linux. You might not know it but Linux is all around us in our everyday devices. Running a Linux kernel (and the other tools necessary) with very limited memory and CPU is a challenge, luckily we have an expert on hand to tell us more about it. DoES Liverpool resident and embedded Linux consultant Alex Lennon will be delivering a talk/demo entitled “Embedded Linux – a background and how to build with the Yocto Project / OpenEmbedded“. This might be of particular interest to any budding IoT (Internet Of Things) hackers amongst the group.

We meet at DOES Liverpool in the city centre (details below) from around 7pm (talks start at 7:30pm) and usually head to a nearby pub to chat more and catch up later.

Find us at DoES Liverpool in the Gostin’s Building on Hanover St, Liverpool City Centre. There is a working lift and the building has good accessibility for all. We’ll be in the first room on the left as you exit the lifts on the 4th floor.

This month we’ll be talking email servers and more specifically outgoing SMTP servers. It’s a topic that many people have asked about so please feel free to spread the word. All are welcome.

We meet at DOES Liverpool in the city centre (details below) from around 7pm (talks start at 7:30pm) and usually head to a nearby pub to chat more and catch up later.

August 2017 LivLUG Meeting – Weds 2nd @ 7pm

Greetings, the next meeting of Liverpool Linux User Group will take place on Wednesday August 2nd at 7pm BST (UTC+1).

Unfortunately I couldn’t do my talk about Proxmox last month but that means I can do it this time instead.

We’ve had a lot of talks this year about cloud platforms, containers and virtualization. So I thought I’d continue the theme. I talked previously about KVM and this month I will share my experiences with moving my home KVM setup to Proxmox, a Debian-based enterprise cloud solution with a nice web interface and some other advanced features. You can read more about it here – https://www.proxmox.com/en/

April 2017 Meeting – Weds 5th At 7pm

Next week is the April 2017 meeting of Liverpool LUG. It will take place Wednesday April 5th from 7pm GMT, at our usual home of DoES Liverpool in Hannover St, City Centre.

This month we have a guest speaker, Les Pritchard from Chester LUG will be telling us about Docker. It seems an appropriate topic for a meeting in Liverpool but got it’s nothing to do with the Mersey this time I’m afraid.
Docker and Containers: From enterprise to the desktop, containers can be a valuable tool for development, testing and production. This talk will introduce Docker and its core concepts. Les will demonstrate the tools he uses and talk about real examples of where it has been deployed.

We meet at DOES Liverpool in the city centre (details below) from around 7pm, the actual talk will start at 7:30pm and we usually head to a nearby pub to catch up afterwards if you care to join us.

Find us at DoES Liverpool in the Gostin’s Building on Hanover St, Liverpool City Centre. There is a working lift and the building has good accessibility. We’ll be in the first room on the left as you exit the lifts on the 4th floor.

March 2017 Meeting – Weds Mar 1st @ 7pm

Hello everyone, the March 2017 meeting of Liverpool LUG is almost upon us. It will take place Wednesday March 1st at 7pm GMT.

This month I said I’d do a talk myself if nobody else volunteered and it looks like you’ve called my bluff. So I’m going to talk about my KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machines) setup and how I manage it using Virsh. A gentle introduction to KVM I suppose. I don’t claim to be an expert and many of you probably know more already, so you can also tell me where I’m going wrong.

Will Noakes has also kindly offered to briefly tell us about his adventures setting up Proxmox at home. It relates nicely to the virtual machine topic. So come along to find out more.

We meet at DOES Liverpool in the city centre (details below) from around 7pm, the talk will start from 7:30pm and we usually head to a nearby pub to chat more and catch up afterwards.

Find us at DoES Liverpool in the Gostin’s Building on Hanover St, Liverpool City Centre. There is a working lift and the building has good accessibility. We’ll be in the first room on the left as you exit the lifts on the 4th floor.
